SHENZHEN, China (TheStreet) -- A recession means different things in different places. While in America, it requires a contraction in gross domestic product, in developing countries, the definition sometimes seems to be slower growth. In China, for instance, growth of less than 8% is considered by many to spell recessionary conditions. By that measure, the recession in China may be over since the Asian Development Bank recently increased its 2009 GDP growth projection to 8.2%. As a result, it may be time to pile into China.
Shenzhen, China-based China Ritar Power(CRTP Quote), which recently went public, produces lead acid batteries for light vehicles and so-called green-tech applications such as solar arrays and wind turbines. As the world warms to projects that had been put on hold, the industry will get a substantial lift.
China Ritar, which has more than 2,000 employees and three production sites in China, sells mainly to telecommunications, transportation and electricity-generation companies. According to the company, the annual growth rate for the Chinese market for light vehicles is projected to be over 30%.
Battery technology may be the most important factor in the global push for green energy. Reliable storage technology for cars and power plants that may no longer be able to match production to demand, due to the random nature of wind and the sun, will be sought after to store power until it's needed. In this capacity, China Ritar could be the beneficiary of contracts from the likes of General Electric(GE Quote) and First Solar(FSLR Quote).
